‘Break their back bones’: State minister heard on video directing cops to beat up people

Maharashtra Minister Abdul Sattar, of the Shinde led Shiv Sena faction, courted yet another controversy on his birthday on Wednesday in Sillod area of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district where he ordered police to lathicharge a crowd after some people misbehaved during a performance of Marathi folk dancer Gautami Patil.

Using obscene language to refer to the people gathered, Sattar directed the police to “beat them so badly that their back bones break”. The police then resorted to a mild lathicharge to disperse and control the mob that gathered near the stage where Gautami performed.

The video of the incident went viral on social media, following which opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) party leaders slammed Sattar. State Congress leaders also demanded action against Sattar – the state’s Minority Development minister. Sattar is also the Guardian Minister of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

Sattar later apologised for his act on Thursday.

As per attendees at the event, as soon as Gautami started to perform, some youths from the crowd started to create a ruckus, bringing the programme to a halt. Upset with this, Sattar got on the stage and in a fit of rage, took the mic in his hands and ordered the police to lathicharge the youth.

Police, listen to me. Lathicharge those in the back. Beat them so badly that their back bones break. You all are demons, you don’t know how to behave like humans,” Sattar was heard saying on the video.
