Borivali suicide: Husband,in-laws arrested for dowry harassment

The husband and parents-in-law of the 26-year-old woman,who jumped to her death from the fourth floor of her residential building in Borivali on Tuesday

The husband and parents-in-law of the 26-year-old woman,who jumped to her death from the fourth floor of her residential building in Borivali on Tuesday,were arrested on charges of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide,on Wednesday. They have been remanded in police custody for two days.

Bhakti Shah’s husband Tejas (32),mother-in-law Sulsha (56) and father-in-law Vasant (62) were arrested after Bhakti’s father,Bharat Jogani,lodged a complaint at the Borivali police station. According to Jogani’s complaint,Bhakti’s in-laws and husband began torturing her after the couple returned from Belgium. They had returned for Bhakti’s delivery six months ago.

Bhakti and Tejas had an arranged marriage three years ago. “After the couple returned along with Sulsha and Vasant from the wedding of Bhakti’s brother in Ahemdabad,the in-laws began complaining about not being treated with respect by Bhakti’s parents. They also started torturing Bhakti for dowry after they realised Bhakti’s parents had spent a lot of money on the wedding,” said a police officer from the Borivali police station.

The police said the couple had daily fights. On Tuesday morning also a fight broke out between them following which Bhakti’s in-laws allegedly called up her father and had an argument. “In a fit of rage,Bhakti jumped from the fourth floor of the building,” said Bhagwat Chatte,senior police inspector from Borivali police station.

“My daughter used to call us often and tell us about the torture she was going through,but we did not think it would go this far,” said Jogani in his police complaint.
