Boost to Metro-I as design cleared…

The Metro rail first corridor got a major boost Wednesday when Western Railway cleared the design proposed for the Andheri steel bridge.

The Metro rail first corridor got a major boost Wednesday when Western Railway cleared the design proposed for the Andheri steel bridge. Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd had been waiting for the clearance for over a year.

“We’ve got a written go-ahead from the railway on both options of construction proposed by MMOPL. This is a big achievement for us as well as Reliance. Now MMOPL has to prepare a final design with either of the options for the substructure construction and submit it in a fortnight,” said Ratnakar Gaikwad, metropolitan commissioner,MMRDA

MMOPL and WR had been exchanging the “general arrangement” drawing since October 2007. The designs were changed entirely twice,to accommodate the railway’s proposal for an elevated Churchgate-Virar railway line.

MMOPL director K P Maheshwari called the approval a “big relief” for the concessionaire. “They have given clearance to both options — a composite steel-and-concrete substructure and a full RCC one. We will decide and submit a detailed design in a couple of weeks.”

The Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor is set to miss the December-end completion deadline as the Andheri bridge is still incomplete. Also, the railways has allowed only two hours of construction a day; MMOPL has sought an extension of at least a couple of hours.

Asked when the bridge would be ready,Maheshwari said,“It is difficult to say as of now. It will be clear once we decide either of the options.”
