THE Bombay High Court Thursday directed four men, who were charged of molesting women during a Navratri procession, to carry out community service of cleaning public spaces in Naupada, Thane, for eight hours every Sunday for a period of six months.

These men were at a Ganesh Mitra Mandal “allegedly in a drunken state”, while making gestures and behaving in a manner which outraged the modesty of a woman. They work in a warehouse in the area. The four men had filed an application for quashing the FIR by consent.

The court asked what they would do in terms of community service and they suggested cleaning the area where they stay in Naupada, Thane. “Will cleaning the area also cleanse the dirt in your hearts?,” questioned Justice V L Achliya.
The HC said, “On Sunday, you will clean the area from 7 am to 11 am and between 4 pm to 8 pm on Sunday evenings for a period of six months.”

The investigating officers have been asked to ensure that they carry out this task and a report in this regard will be
filed with the registrar, HC, every month.
