The Bombay High Court on Friday directed the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to give a fresh look at the need of having better and adequate parking spaces within its area to cater to the increased requirement.

A division bench on Friday passed a judgment on a PIL filed by Vashi resident Sandeep Thakur, alleging non-compliance of past court orders by authorities related to ‘severe’ problems faced by residents and commuters within the civic body’s area due to lack of reasonable parking spaces.

The PIL expressed concern over parking spaces allotted as per Unified Development Control and Promotion Regulation (UDCPR) issued in February, 2020 and said the same was against 2016 HC order. Thakur claimed the NMMC had assured the HC in September 2016 that it was willing to increase parking requirements by modifying regulations after state government’s approval. However, the same was not incorporated while promulgating UDCPR and instead reduced actual effective area for parking spaces.

The NMMC had referred to expert committee’s report which had recommended that there should be three parking spaces for tenement having more than 70 square metres area, two spaces for tenements having built up area between 50 and 70 square metres and two parking spaces for every two tenements having built up area between 25 and 50 square metres and one parking space for every two tenements having area less than 35 square metres.
