(Express File Photo)Amid allegations of bogus voting and booth capturing, Chief Election Commissioner Maharashtra has sought report from Beed Lok Sabha constituency’s Returning Officer (RO) within 48 hours.
Sources within Maharashtra State Election Commission confirmed that the RO was asked to submit the report after the Election Commission of India (ECI) took a note of viral videos from Beed’s Parli assembly tehsil showcasing bogus voting, allegedly with the help of officials on duty. Beed went to poll in the fourth phase on May 13 and witnessed a bitter battle between NCP (SP) candidate Bajrang Sonwane and BJP’s Pankaja Munde.
Taking note of the complaint and viral videos, the ECI has directed the state unit to submit a factual report and submit it within 48 hours. “Based on the report from the RO, further action will be taken. All the CCTV footage will also be checked and officials on duty will also be questioned for the same,” the official said.
Opposition Nationalist Congress Party (SP) candidate from Beed, Bajrang Sonwane, had complained to the ECI after the polling day of May 13 alleging malpractices in Parli tehsil of Beed. He had named villages where polling booths were captured and others were not allowed to vote. In one of the videos, opposition leaders are seen arguing with the officials asking them to not allow bogus voting. In another video, a group is seen voting together inside the polling centre.
