To ensure uninterrupted movement of trains during the monsoon, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to desilt the drains and water channels that are located within the jurisdiction of railways.

This was decided following a monsoon-preparedness meeting that was held among civic officials and officials of the Western Railway (WR) and Central Railway (CR).

Last year, train movement in the central and harbour line got stalled for several hours after the railway tracks got inundated during the rains.
Following the rainfall, it was found out that rain water overflowed from flood-prone locations like Mithi River, Tilak Nagar Nullah, Bhandup.

The civic officials then initiated flood mitigation measures to ensure there’s no water-logging during the monsoon.

During Tuesday’s meeting, areas like Matunga Workshop, Chunabhatti, Wadala, stretch of Mithi River (Sion-Kurla), Tilak Nagar nullah, Karve Nagar nullah were identified as flood-prone areas in Central Railway (CR) zone, while under the jurisdiction of Western Railways (WR), the areas between Andheri and Borivali have been identified as flood-prone areas. The civic officials maintained that in the next four months the drains will be desilted while the storm water drains (SWD) will also be widened for better flow of water.

“Last year, the causality behind heavy water logging was also because the day of rainfall collided with high-tide days. This year, we are taking measures to ensure that the water gets drained out easily, even during high-tide hours,” the official said.

Meanwhile, ahead of monsoon, the BMC is set to tackle 55 flooding spots in Mumbai. According to the BMC’s data, the total number of identified flooding spots in Mumbai stand at 453, out of which 369 flooding spots have already been mitigated.
