With lake levels surpassing the 80 per cent mark, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday announced its decision to revoke the 10 per cent water cut imposed on the city from July 1.

Civic officials attributed the lift in the water cut to the lake levels rising significantly, amid heavy showers in July. Due to good rainfall in July 2023, lakes that supply water to BMC areas have seen a satisfactory increase in quantity of water, as per a bulletin released by the civic body on Tuesday.

Data furnished by BMC showed that water stock in the seven lakes collectively stood at 81.44 per cent of their total capacity till Tuesday morning. Last year on the same date, lake levels had reached 92.62 per cent, while in 2021 water stock had touched 80.44 per cent in the same period.

Mumbai draws its daily water supply from seven lakes, namely Tansa, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Tulsi, Vehar, Upper Vaitarna and Middle Vaitarna. With water stock in the catchment area of lakes depleting to 10.88 per cent on June 30, civic officials had imposed a 10 percent water cut in the city starting July 1.

Furthermore, owing to India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts of weak monsoon spells in the ongoing month, the water cut was extended further into August.

On August 5, lake levels surpassed the 80 per cent mark. “At present, due to satisfactory rainfall, lakes are filled to more than 80 per cent capacity. Thereupon, the water cut has been lifted. However, if any adverse situation arises in August and September 2023, the administration will take an appropriate decision as per need,” the notice reads.

Even as the water cut was revoked, BMC has appealed to Mumbai residents to use water carefully.
