The civic body on Saturday demolished 29 illegal encroachments at the Chamdawada nullah and the Bandra Terminus road number 29. We were acting as per the HC order. Some of the structures here kept on proliferating despite our previous attempts to thwart them, said U D Mistry, assistant municipal commissioner,H (East) ward. As many as 15 new structures were demolished. The new structures were situated behind the nullah, said Mistry.
Structures in the viscinity of Slumdog Millionaire actor Azhars home were spared. We didnt want to only focus on his home. There were other encroachments also to be taken care of. These structures are inhabited by some aggressive people, said Mistry.
This is the second time the BMC is carrying out the drive in the area. On May 14,a similar drive rendered Azhar homeless. The BMC had stated that just because Slumdog Millionaire children stay in the area,we cant stop carrying out the work.
It is a coincidence that celebrity children live there, Mistry had said. He had also said as the celebrity children live in the area,it had become difficult to keep a check on unauthorised encroachments. People in the vicinity use Azhars name to build illegal huts. We become helpless to deal with them, he had said. Over 10 civic personnel and 11 cops participated in the drive.
