The Himalaya Bridge in south Mumbai, one of the primary pedestrian bridges in the island city, is set to get an escalator for swift movement of passengers. While the completion date of the project is March 2024, officials said that it will be ready by the first week of January.
A major portion of this bridge had collapsed during the peak hours in March 2019, claiming nine lives and injuring at least 31 more. Subsequently, the entire structure was pulled down and a new bridge was constructed, which became operational in March this year.
However, this new bridge only had staircases and the civic body initiated the work of setting up the escalator. Officials said that the new escalator will become operational within two months.
The bridge passes above D N Road in south Mumbai and connects Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with the Anjuman-i-Islam University. Civic officials said that the escalator is being set up adjoining the pedestrian walkway towards the university side.
“The existing staircase will remain where it is today and the escalator will be an added extension of this bridge. Since most of the commuter inflow takes place from the university side during the peak hours, we have decided to set up the escalator there,” said a civic official.
The cost of adding this new escalator has been pegged at Rs 1.3 crore, while the BMC had to shell out Rs 6 crore for constructing the new bridge, a steel structure.
