The accused, Baliram Birajdar (56), was arrested by the ACB’s Mumbai unit on October 21 last year along with three others for allegedly accepting Rs 15 lakh from a Dadar-based real estate developer in exchange for issuing a certificate required to begin a construction project.

According to ACB officials, Birajdar was a sub-engineer with the building proposal department of the BMC’s E Ward, and was arrested from his office in Byculla along with two of his colleagues and a civilian who was acting as a mediator.

Following the trap, the ACB searched the residences of all four accused. “In Birajdar’s house, we found documents pertaining to a plot of land in Latur and several bank accounts, and started an evaluation of his assets,” said an ACB officer.

At the end of the evaluation process, which was conducted with the help of a government approved valuer, the ACB compared the value of his assets, which included the land, the money in bank accounts in his and his wife’s name and his residence in Kandivali, with his income that he had earned till the time of his arrest, and found that his assets were worth Rs 56 lakh more than his income.

“Birajdar’s assets are worth 97.95 per cent more than his income, and hence we registered a case of disproportionate assets against him and his wife Rekha on Saturday night. Further inquiries against him are under way,” the officer added.
