With the city undergoing a massive infrastructural churn, senior Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, over 150 BMC engineers and IIT Bombay professors engaged in a brainstorming session on the subject of cement concretisation of roads in Mumbai at the IIT’s Powai campus on Sunday.
Speaking at the session, Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) said that the objective of the ongoing concretisation project is to ensure that roads have a lifespan extending beyond the typical Defects Liability Period (DLP) of 10 years and last for at least 20 years.
During the course of the discussion with the IIT professors, the civic engineers who are engaged in concretisation works shed light on obstacles faced in the project which stemmed from the long distance between cement concrete road site and gravel-carrying vehicles, as well as ready mix concrete (RMC) plants, traffic congestion, and unpredictable weather conditions in Mumbai, amongst others.
Meanwhile, municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, who was also present at the event said, “It is crucial for the public to have access to roads of the highest quality. Therefore, the guidance provided by esteemed institutions like IIT Mumbai through consultations with engineers will play a significant role in achieving this objective.”
