‘Inhe koi lauta do wo kagaz ki kashti’: BJP’s Ashish Shelar taunts Aaditya Thackeray over rainfall claim

The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader said that ‘whether it rained 300 mm or 400 mm per hour, either the then mayor, Uddhav Thackeray or I myself would go to the affected places and talk to the locals’.

In response to Aaditya Thackeray’s claim about handling Mumbai rains, city BJP president Ashish Shelar asked where the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader got his data from, wondering whether the figures he cited were from Cherrapunji, known to receive one of the highest rainfall in the world.

Thackeray said Sunday that “whether it rained 300 mm or 400 mm per hour, either the then mayor, Uddhav Thackeray or I myself would go to the affected places and talk to the locals and find out if there were any issues there”.

“If at all there was any inconvenience faced, we would try to resolve it,” he said at a press conference. “If there were any problems, we would work towards finding a solution to it.”

Shelar likened Thackeray to comical characters from traditional Marathi theatre. “In tamasha, there are two characters, Aburao and Baburao, who entertain the audience by misrepresenting or distorting facts. The Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson is no less than Aburao. And yesterday, Matoshree’s Aaditya proved that he qualifies to be Baburao. He says that during his tenure, Mumbai received 400 mm of rainfall in an hour and that they successfully managed it. Their lies are worse than that of Aburao and Baburao! Dear Mumbaikar…!” he said.

Shelar taunted Thackeray further: “This is not Aaditya’s fault. Instead of playing with paper boats in puddles outside Matoshree, if Yuvraj is made to talk about Mumbai rains, he is bound to talk like that. And so I sincerely feel – Inhe koi lauta do bachpan ka sawan, wo kagaz ki kashti, wo baarish ka paani!”

Shelar also said that even on July 26, 2005, when Mumbai witnessed one of its worst floods, the city did not receive so much rain in one hour.
