‘Best of five’ likely for college admissions

In an attempt to bring about parity between the state board of senior secondary school education (SSC) and other educational boards, the state may now introduce a ‘best of five’ system for admissions to junior colleges. The plan, which was proposed over a year ago,was passed by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education on Thursday. The board is awaiting a final nod from the state government.

According to the ‘best of five’ system, the marks obtained by a student in his or her five top-scoring subjects will be added, discounting the subject in which he/she has secured the lowest marks. The system would increase the overall percentage of SSC students.

“Some students are weak in certain subjects. Owing to this, their overall performance would come down. With this system in place, even if the student fares badly in one paper,it won’t affect his overall performance,” said Tukaram Supe, secretary of the SSC board.

The ICSE board has seven papers,of which five best papers are counted in the final tally. The CBSE has five subjects and allows students to opt for an additional subject without counting its marks in the final tally.

After the proposed percentile system and the 90:10 quota system, this is yet another effort by the SSC board to bring all students belonging to different boards on a single platform during admissions to junior colleges. The Bombay High Court had quashed the percentile system and the 90:10 quota system proposed by the state government.

Meanwhile, the state government has decided to move the apex court in a bid to introduce the 90:10 quota system that will ensure reserved seats for SSC board students in junior colleges. The High Court had observed that the system was proposed without carrying out a detailed study or seeking expert opinion.
