BEST directed to pay Rs 6.75 Lakh to family of driver killed in accident

A Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in a recent order directed BEST to pay Rs 6.75 lakh to the family of a 55-year-old dumper driver killed in an accident in 2009 involving the public undertaking’s bus.

The tribunal also noted that the dumper driver was negligent while crossing the road.

In June 2009, the deceased, Abdul Rehman Sheikh, was knocked down by a BEST bus driver in Andheri while he was crossing the road.

Sheikh sustained injuries to his leg, which had to be amputated and he subsequently died in February 2010.

BEST had claimed that an inquiry had found that the driver was not at fault as the bus was being driven within the stipulated speed limit and the deceased had appeared suddenly before the bus.
