A 20-year-old man has been arrested by Dharavi police for allegedly robbing an on-duty BEST conductor in a crowded bus and stabbing him multiple times with a knife because he resisted the attempt.
Police said the conductor who sustained stab injuries on his neck, shoulder, thigh and waist, is critical and still admitted in hospital. The thief also made away with the conductor’s phone.
A police official said, at around 9 pm on Thursday, when the conductor Ashok Dagle (44) was on duty on a Pydhonie-Vikhroli route bus, “a person around 20 years old, got inside the bus when it reached Dharavi. He initially tried to snatch the bag the conductor had on him with his day’s earnings.”
But when the conductor resisted, the accused drew out a knife, stabbed him multiple times and fled the bus with the conductor’s cellphone worth Rs 15,000. Police said the conductor was rushed to hospital following which a case of attempted murder and robbery was registered at Dharavi police station.
Police formed a special team to locate the suspect. An officer said, “A team was also assigned to scrutinise the CCTV footage but we did not get any substantial clue from it.”
Thereafter, the police started approaching their informers, and were told that a man named Shaban Khan was involved in the crime. Dharavi police laid a trap and caught Khan from his home at Kavla Chawl and brought him to the police station.
