With a fleet of 3,337 buses, the BEST, which is also the second largest mode of public transport in Mumbai, employs around 39,000 people. It pays Rs 135 crore a month towards their salaries and wages — an annual wage bill of Rs 1,620 crore.
The BMC’s municipal chief auditor, after reviewing BEST’s contract with the company, has said in a report that as per the contract, the company has to pay Rs 500 per day for each faulty machine. The report added that the machines did not work on at least 662 days since the contract was awarded.
Umesh Hadikar, was convicted for causing injury to driver Ramgir Gosavi in an incident that took place on March 2, 2015. Gosavi had told the court during his deposition that on the day of the incident, he was driving on route number 27 from Worli to Vaishali Nagar in Mulund.
