After a delay of four-and-a-half years, the northern arm of Barfiwala flyover, the last of the 11 flyovers constructed by the citys development authority over the past five years, will be thrown open to commuters on Friday.
The southern arm of the flyover was opened to traffic in June last year. With the commissioning of the 384-metre long northern arm,the flyover with two lanes on both sides will help commuters reach Juhu Galli from Gokhale bridge and back avoiding the busy SV road.
The distance can now be crossed within a few minutes without any hold up at the time consuming SV Road signals. The two arms of the Barfiwala flyover are expected to ease more than 70,000 vehicles daily from east to west and vice versa, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said in a statement.
The flyover, which will be opened to traffic at 2 pm,is expected to enhance east-west connectivity in the city.
The project was delayed because of several hurdles such as shifting of underground utilities, acquisition of private land, toilet blocks and resettlement of several commercial establishments. Managing traffic on the busy SV Road was also difficult and contributed to the delay in the construction.
