The Mumbai police along with the Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) are on the lookout of a 29-year-old Bangladeshi national who escaped from ATS custody early Monday. According to police, the accused Shahadat Hashim Sheikh was arrested in December 2022 for illegally staying in the country and was jailed after he confessed in court. However, he escaped from custody while the agency was in the process of deporting him back to his country, police said. “He had served punishment and was kept in ATS office since the first week of November on court’s order till the completion of formality to deport him to Bangladesh,” said a police officer. However, on Monday, Sheikh went to the bathroom inside the ATS office at Kalachowkie, saying that he wanted to wash his clothes. The personnel appointed to look after him was stationed outside the bathroom. “In between when the personnel was distracted, he took advantage and escaped after jumping through the window,” said an officer. A case has been registered at Kalachowkie police station and the agencies are trying to trace him.
