Auto driver returns lost camera, wins hearts

His honesty was lauded at the railway station.

A freelance photographer, who forgot his camera worth over Rs 1 lakh in an autorickshaw, was in for a pleasant surprise when the auto driver returned it within an hour. Coincidentally, the auto driver walked into the same police chowky where the photographer had gone to report the loss of his camera. Kartik Rathod (25),a resident of Bhuleshwar, got off the autorickshaw at Andheri Railway Station on Tuesday evening. He had three bags with him,one of which contained his EOS 7d camera and two lenses.

“In a hurry,I forgot the bag in the auto. After five minutes,I realised that I had forgotten the bag,and ran back. I started searching frantically in random autorickshaws,” he said.

He then approached some policemen, who advised him to register a complaint with the D N Nagar police station. As Rathod was informing the police, the auto driver,Vijay Yadav (42),walked into the chowky.

After dropping off Rathod,Yadav left for Santacruz. A woman, who was about to get into his autorickshaw, told him about the abandoned bag in his auto. Yadav drove back to the station, hoping to catch Rathod at the ticket counter, but since he could not find him he went to the chowky. His honesty was lauded at the station.

Yadav, who stays in Santacruz with his wife, son and daughter, had a simple explanation for his honesty. “Once my daughter had lost something valuable and it was very painful for her. I recalled the incident and decided to deliver the bag to its owner,” he said.
