Aurangabad encounter accused in police custody until Jan 28

The absconding SIMI activist was arrested by the Madhya Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) at Khandwa Thursday.

Sharafat alias Amaan Mukim Khan, an accused in a 2012 Aurangabad encounter that left a policeman dead, was Friday remanded in police custody until January 28.

The absconding SIMI activist was arrested by the Madhya Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) at Khandwa Thursday. He was brought to Nagpur and produced before an ATS court Friday.

Sharafat was one of the seven accused in the March 27, 2012 encounter between an Aurangabad ATS team and some alleged SIMI men. One ATS jawan died in the encounter. The SIMI men had allegedly fled to Aurangabad after the encounter but some of them were tracked down to Sailani Baba Darga area in Buldhana district.

“We had arrested five persons then, while two, including Sharafat, had been absconding,” Superintendent of Police (ATS) Sunil Kolhe told The Indian Express.

Prior to the encounter, the ATS had been on the lookout for the accused in Chikhli area of Buldhana, where, the police had information, they were involved in terrorist activity. But they fled Chikhli to hide in Aurangabad, where the encounter took place.

Those arrested at that time were Aqil Khilji, Zafar Hussain Qureshi, Mohammad Abrar Khan, Khalil Khilji and Anvar Khatri. Sharafat is believed to have supplied arms used in the encounter but was not present during the encounter.
