An aspiring model from Lokhandwala, who allegedly used to fly down professional chain snatchers from Delhi and send them back, was arrested on Monday morning after an alert autorickshaw driver ferrying the accused informed the police. The two other accused are yet to be traced.

According to Prakash Wadkar, assistant commissioner of police (Andheri),Tarun Kapoor, who is a native of Delhi, had come to Mumbai a few years ago. He had been staying at a rented flat in Lokhandwala area in Andheri West and did small-time modelling assignments. Kapoor along with his two accomplices have robbed many people in the locality. Wadkar said once in every two months,Kapoor used to book air tickets in the name of Vishal Suri and Jasbeer Singh from Delhi to Mumbai. The three then roamed around in Kapoor’s Maruti Alto car after midnight and target men standing near tea stalls.

On Sunday at 1.30 am,Sanjeev Kumar (24),an MBA student who had come to Mumbai 20 days ago in search of a job, left in a rickshaw after having tea outside Andheri East railway station. After Kumar left,Suri and Singh hired a rickshaw and followed him. When Kumar reached the Imperial Hotel in Andheri, the two intercepted the rickshaw and threatened him with a chopper and snatched his gold chain. The accused then fled in the Alto car that was following the rickshaw.

“After the attack, the rickshaw driver who was ferrying the two accused approached the police. We found a bag on the backseat of the rickshaw that contained an air ticket from Delhi to Mumbai. We traced it and found it had been booked by an agent in Lokhandwala. When we approached the travel agent,we learnt that Kapoor had booked it,” said Wadkar.

The police then nabbed Kapoor from his flat. “Kapoor told us he was the mastermind behind the chain snatchings and wanted to make some quick money. Kapoor used to take the major chunk of the cash which they made by selling the jewellery in Delhi,” added Wadkar.
