With just two days remaining for the completion of the second phase of counting for Census 2011 in Mumbai,the civic administration has planned to provide special counters at all ward offices for those who have not yet been covered. In addition to providing enumerators,who will be present at each ward office,the BMC will also introduce a special cell in its headquarters at CST for the next two days. According to officials,citizens will be able to visit any ward office or the head office of BMC and get themselves enumerated in case the BMC has not listed them in the second phase. “We realised that a lot of people commute to other areas for work,so they can go to any ward office and get themselves enumerated,” said Manisha Mhaiskar,Additional Muncipal Commissioner.

PIL seeks CBI probe into RPF fraud

The Bombay High Court on Thursday admitted a PIL seeking a CBI inquiry into alleged fraud committed by RPF personnel at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. The policemen allegedly collected money using fake bail bonds and false documents from commuters after charging them with crossing tracks. The PIL filed by Sameer Zaveri alleged that RPF officers asked the commuters to pay Rs 500 bail bonds each in courts staged by them. The court has asked the Ministry of Railways and the Union Ministry of Home to file a reply within six weeks. The case has been adjourned for eight weeks.

BMC to waive burial charges

In response to demands from corporators,the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to waive the charges for Hindu cremations and Christian burials in the city. The BMC had earlier waived the charges for burial in Muslim cemeteries. The proposal,to be tabled before the Standing Committee for approval on Friday,has already been approved by the Municipal Commissioner. The BMC charges Rs 75 for the burial of an adult and Rs 20 for a child. There are 43 Hindu crematoriums and seven Christian cemeteries in the city.

Three-year-old boy brutalised by aunts

Two women were arrested in Thane district on Wednesday for allegedly torturing their three-year-old nephew. Fazal Shaikh was allegedly burnt with cigarette butts over the past eight months by his paternal aunts Nafisa Shaikh and Mehjabeen. The boy is recuperating at Sion Hospital. The women have been booked under the IPC and Juvenile Justice Act after a case was registered against them by Suraiya Sheikh,another aunt of the boy. The police suspect the motive behind the crime to be property related,with Fazal having inherited Rs 15 lakh from his grandfather.

Montek to receive Honorary D.Litt degree

Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia will be conferred the Honorary D.Litt (Doctor of Letters) degree by Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan on Friday. Sankaranarayanan who is also the Chancellor of Universities in the state,will confer the degree at the 13th convocation of the Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University at Nanded,a Raj Bhavan release said.
