An accused in the Antilia terror scare case, who had given a confessional statement to a magistrate, told the special court Wednesday that he wants to withdraw his statement. The trial in the case is yet to begin.
A vehicle laden with gelatin sticks (explosives) was parked near the residence of industrialist Mukesh Ambani in February 2021. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against ten persons including three Mumbai policemen in connection with the case. The statement of one of the accused was recorded by a magistrate under section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code in 2022.
He was subsequently kept in a separate prison from the rest of the accused. During the last hearing, the man had sought to be produced before the court from jail.
On Wednesday, he filed an application before the court to withdraw or cancel his confessional statement. The court has asked the NIA to file a response.
Meanwhile, another accused, Anand Jadhav, who allegedly had a role in the murder of Thane resident Mansukh Hiran, who was linked to the parked vehicle, has filed for bail. Jadhav has claimed that he was falsely implicated and that he has been in jail since June 2021 with the trial yet to begin. Policemen including Sachin Waze retired ACP Pradeep Sharma and others were arrested in 2021 by the NIA. Sharma is currently out on bail.
