Reacting to the untimely death of a 5-year-old hippopotamus in the Byculla Zoo on April 24,animal welfare NGO,People for Ethical Treatment to Animals, dashed off a notice to the Central Zoo Authority’s member secretary B R Sharma highlighting a 2005 Bombay High Court directive to improve the condition of the zoo.

The High Court in its judgment dated July 18,2005,had ordered environmentalist Bittu Sahgal to inspect the zoo and submit a report before a committee formed for its consideration. Sharma was appointed the chairman of the committee.

PETA in its notice said: The HC stated that in order to oversee the implementation of the directions given by the apex court and by this court,we request Bittu Sahgal to inspect the zoo and supervise the implementation of our directions and submit its report before the committee for its consideration. Subsequently Sahgal had drawn up an action plan. However, citing the incidents of neglect and death,PETA alleged that “the directions of the court have apparently not been complied with”.

The NGO called on Sharma to conduct an immediate enquiry and inspection,in his capacity as chairperson of the committee,“failing which we will be compelled to approach the Bombay High Court for appropriate directions”.

However,Sharma, who had not received the notice when Newsline contacted him, said,“I don’t think the death of one hippopotamus calls for an inspection by us. The Mumbai zoo has a makeover plan in the offing and for some reason it has been delayed. As far as animal enclosures are concerned, the zoo has to follow specific CZA conditions on maintaining them till the makeover begins. I am sure the city and state authorities can oversee those specifications.”
