Union Home Minister Amit Shah will arrive in Maharashtra’s Nagpur late on Wednesday on a two-day visit. Shah’s visit to Nagpur, which is the RSS headquarters, comes just 10 days after his Navi Mumbai visit on April 16.

Shah will inaugurate the National Cancer Institute at Nagpur on Thursday and share the dais with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat, who will also attend the function, highly placed sources said. Although sources indicated Shah’s visit was pre-planned, Shah is likely to reflect on the recent developments in Maharashtra politics.

“When the big two of BJP-RSS meet on any forum or alongside events, it is obvious they do not talk about weather or food. Some common concerns related to state or national issues could be discussed,” a senior BJP/RSS functionary said. However, he was quick to add, “We cannot hazard any guess as to what will exactly transpire between Shah and Bhagwat.”

Insiders indicated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was to inaugurate the cancer institute but his visit was deferred due to the tight schedule following Assembly elections in Karnataka.

Earlier, at a function held at Navi Mumbai’s Kharghar, Shah had conferred the Maharashtra Bhushan Award to social worker Appasaheb Dharmadikari. However, the April 16 event turned tragic as 14 people died due to heat stroke and more than 300 were hospitalised. The state government has set up a committee headed by senior IAS officer Nitin Kareer to probe the incident even as it has faced flak from the Opposition.

This will be Shah’s fourth visit to Maharashtra after the Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis government came to power in the state.

In February, as part of a three-day Maharashtra tour, Shah had travelled to Mumbai, Nagpur and Kolhapur. In Nagpur, Shah had visited the RSS headquarters.
