As the agitation over Maratha quota entered the fourth day and thousands continued to throng the city’s streets, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday deployed additional sanitation workers and civic amenities to prevent inconvenience for the protesters.

Civic officials said that until Monday, over 1,000 sanitation workers, who have been roped in from across different wards, have been pressed on the protest site and nearby areas to maintain cleanliness while arrangements of at least 400 toilets have also been made.

Following the meeting, the BMC has constituted a war room comprising six civic officials to monitor the situation on ground.

In what has encumbered routine life and triggered traffic snarls over the past three days, thousands of protestors from across Maharashtra’s hinterlands have poured into Azad Maidan and its surrounding areas to lend their support to Maratha activist Manoj Jarange Patil, who launched a hunger strike on Friday.

While the BMC had initially pressed fewer resources, it has increased its deployment over the weekend to cater to the demands of the large gathering who have sought refuge along the streets of Azad Maidan and nearby areas.

Since Friday, over 1,000 sanitation workers were on field to clear over 70 metric tonnes of garbage.

In a bid to prevent littering, the BMC has also provided 1,500 dustbin bags to the protestors, appealing them to use the bags for disposing filth.

The civic body has deployed the use of jetting and suction plants for cleaning.

Meanwhile, amid plaints, the BMC has increased the number of toilets near the protest site to over 400.

Furthermore, officials added that at least six teams have been dedicated for constant fumigation on the protest site to prevent the spread of pests and mosquitoes.
