An identification parade of those arrested in connection with the murder of Keenan Santos and Reuben Fernandez,is likely to take place on Wednesday. Police officers, however, are wary of the parade as the photograph of one of the accused was published in a local tabloid last week. This, they claim, may hamper the identification process.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Western Region) Vishwas Nangre-Patil confirmed that the identification parade will be held on Wednesday. We have requested the authorities concerned to make all the preparations and conduct the parade tomorrow. The accused are currently lodged at the Arthur Road Jail, said Nangre-Patil.
Among those who are likely to be summoned for the identification are members of Keenan and Reubens group, employees of Amboli Bar and Kitchen, the paanwala outside the food joint and the coconut water vendor from whom one of the accused took knives to kill the duo.
While police officers are tight-lipped about the witnesses, they said the parade will be done in the presence of an executive magistrate. We have requested an executive magistrate to be present in the Arthur Road Jail during the identification. The report by the executive magistrate will then be compiled and sent to court, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 9) Pratap Dighavkar.
A senior police officer, who did not wish to named, said,We may face some problems in the parade as the picture of one of the accused was released. Now,we will try and get the witnesses to identify the other accused. Even if the other three accused are identified,it proves the main accused was with them at the time of the incident. Their statements will prove it.
However,Nangre-Patil added that if there is any trouble during the identification parade, the police have enough evidence to nail the accused.
Besides the identification parade, accounts of eyewitnesses and other evidence are permissible in a court of law. This is a watertight case and we are confident there will be no problem with the evidence that we have collected, he said.
