Alumni Day at IIT Bombay: Class of 1998 pledges Rs 57 crore for Legacy Project

The Legacy Project is a way for alumni to come together with their batchmates to give back to their alma mater.

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay celebrated its Annual Alumni Day on Sunday.

The Silver Jubilee Batch (class of 1998) has pledged a sum of Rs 57 crore towards its Legacy Project. Last year, the Silver Jubilee batch (class of 1997) had pledged Rs 26 crore towards the legacy project.

On Sunday, the Golden Jubilee Batch (class of 1973) pledged a total of Rs 7.15 crore.

The Legacy Project is a way for alumni to come together with their batchmates to give back to their alma mater.

According to information shared by the institute, the class of 1998’s contribution exceeded the significant donation of Rs 41 crore made by the class of 1971 during their Golden Jubilee celebrations at the institute in 2022.

The contributions from the Golden Jubilee Batch – Class of 1973 — will lead to setting up the C1973 EV PowerTrain Laboratory and to start Faculty Awards for Excellence in Research.

“The funds raised by the class of 1998 will help the institute support key academic and research projects. They include Project Evergreen, which aims to create sustainable and eco-friendly hostels for students; Makerspace labs to foster scientific and technological innovation and creativity; and Student Aid initiatives (including scholarships) to fuel the aspirations of the next generation of students at the institute,” said a statement issued by the institute.

The statement said: “While the lab (C1973 EV PowerTrain Laboratory) will initially focus on 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers, small cars, and light commercial vehicles, it will also support India’s journey toward becoming a worldwide hub for small EVs.”

On the occasion, the IIT Bombay also launched the third edition of its annual fund-raising campaign – GO-IIT Bombay – apart from bestowing the Distinguished Service Award and the Chapter Service Award among alumni members. The theme of this year’s GO-IIT Bombay campaign is ‘Invest in Excellence. Shape Tomorrow’.
