AICTE to create database to facilitate student-industry interaction

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is in the process of creating a database of final year students studying across various technical institutes in the country, which will be linked to an industry database,to create jobs opportunities.

This will include students of management, engineering, architecture, pharmacy, computer application and hotel management among others. There will be a standard format of a curriculum vitae (CV) and students’ details will be fed into the database, which will be available on the AICTE website. “We will link this to an industry database. The aim is to create job opportunities for students as well as address the requirements of the industry,” said SS Mantha, acting Chairman of the AICTE.

For instance,as per their qualification and area of interest, students will be able to mark their resume to a particular industry. Simultaneously,a company will be able to raise a query or post its requirement and select students who fit the job. The AICTE is tying up with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for this initiative. Currently, the Council has a database of 8,000 industries as part of this project.

In yet another initiative, the AICTE is planning to create a ‘project portal’ to enable students to enlist their personal data, abstract of the project/research they are working on and keywords. It will include students from all disciplines. At present, there are 9,455 institutes running 13,816 programmes in the country. “Both postgraduate (PhD and masters) and undergraduate students do a lot of project or research work. But once they leave the institute, these projects go for a toss. This database will be put in the public domain and will encourage exchange of work,” said Mantha. The idea is that when one types in a keyword,it will show the relevant projects, the students working on them and their guides.

This move, according to AICTE officials, will help facilitate collaboration among students. “It can help capture good intellectual property (IP) and even identify commercial value of a work. Interesting projects can be further developed and IP can be generated from it. It will not just promote research but also prevent duplication of work,” said another AICTE official. It is expected to be ready in a month’s time.
