A 33-year-old man was arrested from Agra in Uttar Pradesh by Gamdevi police for allegedly creating a fake website of a South Mumbai-based popular sweet shop — Tiwari Brothers — and duping its customers under the pretext of delivering sweets.
Police said the accused, identified as Rahul Dogra, uploaded his personal mobile number on the fake website of the shop and tricked its customers into entering a five-digit confirmation code at the payment window of Google Pay and sending the amount. Subsequently, he used to cheat them under the pretext of returning the lost money.
According to police officials, the 50-year-old complainant, who works in a school, was looking for the contact number of ‘Tiwari Brother’ on Google. She wanted to order sweets and snacks to distribute them to the school teachers on the occasion of Parsi New year.
‘While she was searching for it on August 16, she came across a website and without realising that it was fake, she contacted the number mentioned on the website,” said an investigator.
She placed an order for some snacks and sweets after which the frauds allegedly asked her to make an advance payment.
“She was told that the sweets and snacks will not be delivered until she makes an advance payment of Rs 1,950. After making the payment, when she contacted them again for delivery, the accused asked her to complete the formalities by sharing her UPI Id on which she sent the money,” said an officer.
Dogra then asked her to enter confirmation code number 29991 on the payment window and when she raised a question, the accused tricked her into completing the formality for delivery. And as soon she entered the code, the complainant received a message that Rs 29,991 was deducted from her account.
The woman then informed him that the money was deducted from her account after which the accused duped her into sending another Rs 29,991 by making her follow the same process under the pretext of refunding the money.
“The woman later realised that she was duped of Rs 61,932 and when she contacted them again asking to refund the whole amount, the accused stopped answering her calls and later blocked her,” said an officer.
A case of cheating and forgery was registered at Gamdevi police station following which the cyber officials started looking for the suspects. The police said that through call data records, bank account details and other technical analysis, the officials found suspect involved in cheating as Dogra and was based in Agra.
“A team was subsequently sent and Dogra was apprehended from his residence and brought to Mumbai. He confessed to crime during interrogation and revealed the names of his accomplices. Our team is still in Agra trying to locate his accomplices,” said an officer.
Another officer said, “Multiple cases get registered as and when we approach a festival because people tend to order sweets for which they go to Google and look for the contact number of Tiwari Brothers sweet shop and end up getting duped.”
Dogra is involved in duping several people using the same modus operandi and many cases were detected after his arrest.
