Actor’s mother records statement: ‘Rahul beat Pratyusha, did not let her talk to us’
Soma (49), a resident of Jamshedpur, recorded a detailed statement at the Bangur Nagar police station on Tuesday, in which she made several allegations against Pratyusha’s boyfriend Rahul Raj Singh.

IN her statement to police on Tuesday, Soma Banerjee, mother of TV actor Pratyusha Banerjee who allegedly committed suicide recently, has claimed that a day before her death, Pratyusha called an aunt and told her she was tired of living and did not have the will to go on.
Soma (49), a resident of Jamshedpur, recorded a detailed statement at the Bangur Nagar police station on Tuesday, in which she made several allegations against Pratyusha’s boyfriend Rahul Raj Singh, who has been booked for abetment. Soma said Rahul would abuse her daughter mentally and physically, suspected her of cheating on him, harassed her with questions about her former boyfriend and other male friends, and threatened to destroy her family if she told her parents about the abuse.
According to the statement, which is part of the FIR, a distressed Pratyusha called her aunt, who lives in Ambernath, on March 31, after being abused and beaten by Singh. At that time, the statement adds, her aunt comforted Pratyusha and asked her to come to stay with her, but she did not do so. Pratyusha, the mother’s statement adds, had made similar appeals to her aunt and uncle in January, February and March this year during visits to their home.
The FIR states in January, Pratyusha showed them wounds she sustained from beatings by Singh. “Rahul was suspicious of her friendship with other men and her ties with an ex boyfriend. He also threatened to destroy her family if she told us about the abuse,” Soma said.
After that visit, the uncle called Soma and informed her that Pratyusha did not want to stay with Singh. According to the statement, he also booked a train ticket for Pratyusha to go to Jamshedpur.

During subsequent visits to Ambernath in February and March, Pratyusha told her aunt and uncle that Singh would assault her in a drunken state. “Pratyusha said that she could not tolerate living any more,” the statement reads.
Soma has told the police that Singh’s alleged abuse of her daughter began in June 2015 and went on until she died on April 1. She also said that while the couple lived in Kandivli, both she and a domestic help were witness to physical abuse and fierce arguments. Singh, Soma has claimed, used Pratyusha’s debit cards for his own expenses and even forbade her from speaking to her parents, claiming that they were living off her money.
According to her statement, Singh left an apartment in Versova and moved in with Pratyusha and Soma in their Kandivli home October last year.
“He thought I was doing black magic to sabotage their marriage. After a point my husband and I became fed up of living with Singh and in January, we went back to Jamshedpur,” she has said in her statement.
In June 2015, when he first met Pratyusha, Singh allegedly told her he owned two productions houses, four apartments, three vehicles and a 150-acre plot in Ranchi. His mother, the statement adds, is an MLA in Jharkhand while Singh himself declared that he was divorced.
In August 2015, during the early days of their courtship, Soma told the police, she gave Rs 2 lakh to a friend of Singh to celebrate Pratyusha’s birthday. Not long after, Singh proposed marriage to Pratyusha and she accepted, Soma has said.
