Eating out in Mumbai just got a little personal. Imagine this: a sit-down dinner at someones private residence, you pick up your tab,but a master chef whips up culinary delights. Confusing? Yes,but a delicious concept.
An initiative of the Brown Paper Bag website,(www.bpbweekend.com),run by the enterprising Mansi Poddar and Kanika Parab, this underground restaurant is in its second sitting already. The duo are relatively new to organising interesting evenings; their first event was an aphrodisiac food tasting at East which pales in (innovative) comparison to their latest concept of underground kitchens by the name of Turning Tables.
Turning Tables is a monthly sit-down dinner cooked by a prominent restaurants chef at a subscribers (of the website) house. A lot of foodies get excited by the idea of having a celebrity chef cook for a small gathering in a non-fancy setting, Parab explains. Poddar adds that while this is a familiar concept in New York or London, this is unique as we feature established chefs instead of upcoming ones.
The first event, hosted last month, featured Tasting Rooms chef Kshama Prabhu. The next one is on Friday night at restaurateur Srila Chatterjees home in Altamount Road. It will have signature dishes by Chef Mrigank Singh of Blue Frog for just Rs 700 a pop. I will feature my own creations, not the restaurants. I decided to participate as it is an event that features the best cause: food, Singh says.
More than just food,Parab and Poddar think the best reason to attend one of their events is to meet new and interesting people. Turning Tables was specifically designed as an event to meet new people, eat good food and generally expand avenues in which networks can be built in unconventional ways, they point out.
