Confined to a wheelchair for the past 15 years due to rheumatoid arthritis, the family of 65-year-old Naseem Arsal never thought she would walk again.
Their apprehension became stronger when her knees started deforming and she was bedridden for the past six months.
After much debate and weighing pros and cons,Arsal recently underwent knee replacement. She now moves around on her own.
I neglected the pain in my knees for years as I was scared of surgery. The pain increased and I lost hope of walking again in my life. I became dependent on family members and felt like a liability, she said.
When Arsal approached orthopaedic and joint replacement surgeon Siddharth Yadav,he was surprised to see the condition of her knees.
We rarely see such deformity in urban affordable population. The patient came to us with gross deformities in her knees caused by arthritis. Both her knees were bent at an angle of 45 degrees, with very little movement. The bones had become fragile with defects, Yadav said.
Arsal was operated on at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital. Yadav used soft hands during the three-hour-long surgery performed after meticulous planning.
The operation made me independent. I was not able to move an inch without help. Now,I do everything on my own, Arsal said.
She will undergo physiotherapy the next few months to walk completely normally.
