The state government on Monday informed the Bombay High Court that two special teams have been formed to trace Anil Bheda, the missing witness in the Lakhan Bhaiya encounter case.
Bhedas wife Aruna had filed a Habeas Corpus petition on Friday apprehending that her husband may have been abducted to prevent him from deposing in the case as a prosecution witness. Her counsel Mihir Desai told the court that the trial court had framed charges in the case on March 8 and Bheda had been missing since March 13. Bheda was scheduled to depose in court on March 16,the first day of trial. Bhedas family feared that he may have been kidnapped or done away with,Desai said.
Submitting an investigation report in the case, additional public prosecutor AS Gadkari told the court that the investigations by the two special teams were underway and efforts were being made to trace Bheda. The court was also told that Bhedas phone call records were being examined by the police as he had earlier received threat calls asking him not to depose in the case.
Calling for a further investigation report,a Division Bench of Justice PV Hardas and Justice MN Gilani adjourned the case till next week.
Bheda is the key witness in the killing of Ramnarayan Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiya,an alleged Chhota Rajan gang member,in November 2006. After Guptas brother Ramprasad moved the High Court, the court directed a magistrate to inquire into the case. The magistrate inferred that the encounter was fake and Lakhan Bhaiya was in fact murdered.
