Eighteen students of the Seth G S Medical College associated with the premier King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Parel, were on Sunday arrested for allegedly ragging 10 first-year juniors during a New Year bash.
The juniors from the Department of Physiotherapy had complained that they had been made to perform shameful acts.
The anti-ragging committee of the college, after verifying the incident, handed the 18 over to the Bhoiwada police. On the complaint of the deputy dean,we registered a case of wrongful restraint and intentional insult to provoke breach of peace against them in addition to booking them under the Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act, said senior inspector Vikram Patil of Bhoiwada police station.
A meeting headed by Mayor Shraddha Jadhav was held on Sunday at the college, one of the most sought-after institutes in the city.
I have ordered the college authorities to take strict action on the culprits so that such incidents do not recur. We will also ensure that the action taken by the college does not ruin their careers, Jadhav told reporters after the meeting.
Whatever they (seniors) did was wrong. Meritorious students study in the prestigious institute and such incidents will give a wrong impression, she said. Jadhav, who also visited the KEM Hospital and met the parents of the ragged juniors, said she had asked the parents to lodge a formal complaint with the police.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said,As per the strict anti-ragging guidelines issued by the Centre, the anti-ragging committee probed the matter internally and later asked the affected students to lodge a formal complaint with the police.
