13-year-old girl dies by suicide at Jalna school; probe ordered

The incident at CTMK Gujarati School in Jalna took place immediately after school began on Friday.

The girl was a Class 8 student at the CTMK Gujarati School in Jalna, and the incident occurred when the school had just begun.

A 13-year-old girl from Jalna in Maharashtra died by suicide early on Friday morning, allegedly after she was pulled up for lagging in studies. While the girl’s father alleged that some issue at the school could have led to the incident, the local police said the investigation is still on.

The girl was a Class 8 student at the CTMK Gujarati School in Jalna, and the incident occurred when the school had just begun. Her grandmother, a sanitation worker, is an employee of the same school.

“CCTV footage shows that the girl was with her grandmother and teacher before the incident. An ADR [accidental death report] is registered as of now. Further investigation is on to ascertain the reason,” Ajaykumar Bansal, Superintendent of Police, Jalna, said. The girl was allegedly being scolded for lagging in academics.

The ADR has been registered at the Sadar Bazar police station. The school education department has also initiated an inquiry into the incident.

Talking to the local media in Jalna, the girl’s father, who is also a sanitation worker, said, “I rushed to the school after receiving a call, but I was told that she was taken to a hospital. There, I was told that the chances that she will survive this are very low. She was then taken to the Civil Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival. I do not know the reason…This happened in school, so maybe they will be able to tell what the problem was.”

In the backdrop of a recent suicide by a 19-year-old boy in Mumbai and a Class 10 student in Delhi, the 13-year-old’s suicide has sparked a discussion on mental health concerns among teenagers.
