In a major drive launched by the Mumbai Traffic Police on the night of July 5,as many as 113 people were prosecuted for driving under the influence of alcohol. Of them,97 drivers appeared before the Special Metropolitan Magistrate on July 6. However,warrants have been issued against 12 people and the bail deposits of four people have been forfeited by the court for not appearing for hearing.
The court also adjourned hearing on 31 cases till the next day.
The court awarded 12 other drivers the punishment of sitting in the court till the rising of the court and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on each of them. Their driving licences were also suspended for next six months. As many as 29 drivers were sentenced to a days simple imprisonment. Of them,driving licences of 19 people were suspended for six months. The court also suspended licences of nine drivers for two years and a drivers licence was suspended permanently.
The court awarded two days of simple imprisonment to 15 people and imposed a fine Rs 2,000 on 12 of them. Of these 15 drivers,two people were fined Rs 2,500 each and one driver was fined Rs 1,000. The licences of all these drivers were suspended for six months.
The four drivers,who were sentenced to three days of simple imprisonment,were fined Rs 2000 each and their licences were suspended for six months.
Two drivers,who were not carrying their licences with them,were fined Rs 2500 and sentenced to five days of imprisonment. Two other drivers were awarded the punishment of sitting in the court till the rising of the court. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 2500 on each of them, said DCP (Traffic) Shahaji Solunkhe.
