As many as 400 employees of Masina Hospital struck work on Friday to protest salary delay. They forced the hospital administrator out and were hostile towards the HR department.
A protester said,The management has been delaying payment for 4-5 months. They tell us the delay has something to do with the shutting down of pathology lab. We dont see the connection. We staged a protest after first shift. The hospital administrator came to talk to us but we cannot stand her anymore and will not let her in tomorrow also.
The hospital had to shut its pathology lab due to financial constraints two months ago, which has added to its losses.
Medical director Rohinton Dastur said,We are a charitable trust hospital and over the years have suffered a loss of Rs 21 crore. We have had to use savings to release salary to workers. There are things we have been wanting to do to improve the situation but the unions go on strikes preventing necessary steps. They are unwilling to understand if they keep hindering, the situation will only worsen, he said.
