In the ongoing physical tests for the posts of firemen and drivers in the municipal corporation, the urban applicants have failed miserably. A total of 325 candidates have applied against the posts of 40 firemen and 8 drivers. The physical abilities include running 60 yards carrying 60 kgs in less than a minute, climbing up the 10 feet rope vertically in less than a minute and setting a ladder against wall in 60 seconds. The applicants from villages have performed far better than their urban counterparts.

Additional commissioner K P Brar said,“The third test is being cleared by all the candidates, but most of the candidates are failing in the first two tests. The urban youth are not even able to pick the 60 kgs. Even many are not even able to climb even a feet of the rope. There are a few rural applicants who have cleared these tests in 30 seconds.” Brar said the tests started yesterday and so far 200 have already appeared for the tests of which only 57 have been shortlisted. The remaining 125 will appear tomorrow. More than 90 per cent of the shortlisted candidates is from villages. The minimum qualification for the post of firemen is matric while for driver it is middle standard. While a few graduates have also appeared for the interview from the urban areas who, however, have been rejected because they are physically not strong enough. After physical tests, formal interviews will also be done before the final selection of the candidates.
