Vikas Garg is the new Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana. Presently posted as the Patiala deputy commissioner,he succeeds Sumer Singh Gurjar who has been shifted to Chandigarh to the Public Grievances Redressal Cell as special secretary.

A 1998-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Punjab cadre,Gurjar had joined as Ludhiana DC on March 12,2007. The last year of his tenure was marred by controversies as Vidhan Sabha Deputy Speaker Satpal Gosain had levelled charges of corruption against him in the allotment of fire-cracker stalls in the city. However,Gurjar had denied these allegations and levelled counter allegations against Gosain.

Later in the mid of the month,Gurjar was under the scanner of the Vigilance Bureau (VB) when arrested Ludhiana SDM (West) Arvind Parkash Verma made revelations that he used to share bribe with top officials of the district administration. The VB had arrested Verma along with three others while taking a bribe of Rs 10,000 allegedly for changing a power of attorney of an NRI in July 2008.

Though prior to his appointment in the city,Gurjar had earlier served Ludhiana as the Additional DC (General),his posting came as a surprise as the Ludhiana DC post is considered to be a plum post and is usually not given to a new person. This was the first posting as DC for Gurjar.

On the other hand,Vikas Garg, also a 1998 batch IAS officer, had joined as Patiala DC in September 2008. Garg had earlier served as DC Mukatsar. Sources said that this change of guard may take place in a couple of days.
