Vets disrupt Kisan Mela, seek regularisation of jobs

Veterinary doctors working on the contract basis created a ruckus inside the main pandal at the inaugural function of the two-day Kisan Mela which opened at the Punjab Agricultural University on Tuesday.

The pandal which was choc-a-block with farmers witnessed some young boys and girls march into the well of the pandal, carrying banners and raising slogans against the state government.
Co-ordinator of the protest,Dr Navdeep Singh Khinda, said,“We are veterinary doctors who are working primarily in the rural areas. Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal had promised to regularize our jobs some four years back at this very spot but he has failed to keep his promise.”

Khinda added,“We get meager salary. Even a Class IV employee posted in our department gets a higher wage than us and the worse part is that Punjab government has no surplus of vet doctors. College of Veterinary Sciences GADVASU is the only college which produces some 45 qualified vets each year out of which 10-15 leave for foreign shores leaving just 30 behind. It is sad that this government cannot adjust 30 vets and at the same time it is allowing opening of private veterinary colleges in the state. By doing so,the Badal government is making a fool of the youth especially of the rural youth.”

The protesting youth remarked,“While making speeches in the public,Badal himself says that anybody working for three years on a contract should be regularized but the animal husbandry minister says he can regularize only 125 persons what about others. We have met and talked to all the officials concerned but our pleas have fallen on deaf ears. Currently,we have boycotted some of additional services to press our demands. We have been working for four years without any increments. Today’s protest was a wake up call for the government.”

Meanwhile, the agitating professionals who were raising slogans in the well of the pandal suddenly rushed on to the stage where all the dignitaries including PAU V-C Dr M S Kang along with deans directors and members of the board of management were seated.
