Says steps will soon be taken to augument income tax collection
Looking at the huge growth the industry has witnessed in both Ludhiana and Jalandhar, both these cities are grossly under-assessed. The tax revenue and even the tax base needs to be widened a lot, said G.S Randhawa, chief commissioner,Income Tax,Ludhiana range, who joined two days ago. Besides,Ludhiana,Randhawa will look after the districts of Jalandhar,Kapurthala,Hoshiarpur and Moga as well.
He said,Tax evasion is huge in Ludhiana and Jalandhar and hence there is lot of potential for increase in tax collection. The necessary measures will be taken to augment the tax collection and also to add voluntary tax compliance.
Randhawa was earlier posted as Commissioner,Appeals,in Panchkula, and before coming to Ludhiana,he was the commissioner in Chandigarh income-tax office.
He has replaced R.K. Tewari, who has been transferred out to Ghaziabad.
It needs to be mentioned that last time around, seven lakh assesses had filed income tax returns. Randhawa said,Looking at the growing city, the assesses who are filing returns are far less in number than expected. Hence the network to increase the number of assesses also need to be enhanced.
Randhawa however plans to encourage the assesses to file actual returns first of all.
The industrialists are flourishing and buying expensive cars and other luxury items, but it is not being reflected in the tax revenue. The city residents need to be honest while filing tax returns. At times they are under-assessed as well, he indicated.
It needs to be mentioned that last year, revenue target from Ludhiana was Rs 1600 crore, but due to recession,it was reduced to Rs 1200 crore.
