About 7,000 prisoners have been de-addicted after they got treatment in the re-habilitation centres of various jails of Punjab. That is why games for the jail inmates have been organised so as to promote healthy living among them.
This was stated by Rajpal Meena,additional director general police (jails),who inaugurated the state-level games for jail inmates at Ludhiana Central Jail on Monday afternoon.
About 120 inmates of different jails of Punjab are participating in this four-day-long tournament and they have already won competitions at their respective jails and later at zonal level. The inmates will be competing in volleyball,tug of war,kabaddi,long jump,100 m,200 m,400 m and 800 m races.
Meena said,The efforts of jail department have given us good results and we have made 7,000 prisoners say no to drugs. Now they are being encouraged to take part in sports events and to lead a healthy life once they are released.
Asserting that these games would be organised every year,Meena said that jails were making strict checks regarding the drug intake by prisoners.
On Monday,a colourful cultural programme was presented by prisoners. Ludhiana zone defeated Patiala zone in tug of war while in kabaddi,Bathinda zone defeated Patiala zone by 37-18 points.
Jail superintendents from across the state were present on the occasion.
