The police today claimed to have busted a gang of poppy husk smugglers,who used to smuggle the contraband from Madhya Pradesh into the city. Interestingly,three out of the six arrested are women. The police have seized 123 kg of poppy husk from them.
The Division No. 8 SHO,Maninder Bedi said that these gang members were arrested late last night from near Domoria bridge. He said that the accused were travelling in a mini bus,which they had hired from Delhi while coming back to the city from MP along with the poppy husk powder.
The accused have been identified as Rajinder Singh alias Jinder,Chhinder Pal Singh and Amrik Singh,all residents of Laddowal village on the outskirts of the city,Bimla,a resident of Basti Jodhewal area,Charno,a resident of Jalandhar district,and Deso,a resident of Phillaur. Bedi said the police had set up a naka to nab the gang members after receiving a tip-off.
The police said that the accused after purchasing the poppy husk at a cheap price in MP and had separately reached Delhi. He said that after converging in Delhi,they hired a mini bus to come to the city.
He said that these persons had been booked under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He said that further investigation into the matter was in progress. He said that information about other criminal activities of the gang were likely to be surface during the interrogation of the accused.
