Second accused in ASI murder case arrested

Police have arrested the second culprit,Karanvir Singh alias Ujjwal,in the May 2011 ASI Gurdial Singh murder.

Earlier,about two-and-a-half months back,another accused,Jaswant Singh Goldy,was arrested by Patiala police. He had been brought by Ludhiana police on production warrant. During interrogation,he revealed that Karanvir was in Delhi these days. Karanvir and Jaswant Singh were both friends earlier and had committed more than 375 robberies and snatchings on roadside at gunpoint or after beating people in the state. Earlier,Goldy had admitted to have a hand in 225 robberies but Karanvir on Monday disclosed 150 more such cases.

Karanvir belongs to a 1984 riots victim family,which has been staying in Jamalpur since 2009-2011. During this time only,his involvement in snatching and robbery incidents started. Later,the family had shifted to Delhi,said ACP Satish Malhotra,adding that both the accused belonged to ordinary families and had not completed their studies.

Malhotra said the accused had accomplices who used to operate on vehicles without number plates and snatch cash and jewellery from people on the roadside. They used to carry a cutter along with them with which they used to cut bangles,earrings or gold chains of women and even used to snatch vehicles of commuters. Off and on they would fix number plates on their bikes as well.

According to the ACP,Goldy said after Karanvir had gone to Delhi,he started operating an independent gang in the whole of Punjab while Karanvir’s gang functioned in Delhi.

About the ASI case<\b>

On May 18,2011,ASI Gurdial Singh was on police patrolling when Goldy and Karanvir riding a Pulsar motorbike passed from that side. Singh asked the duo to stop but they accelerated their speed and started firing at the ASI and one civilian Ajay Sharma. The motorcycle did not have any number plate. That’s why they were stopped by the officer. Both Gurdial and Ajay suffered injuries but Gurdial died during treatment in hospital. The interrogation of the accused revealed that Karanvir fired at the ASI while Goldy rode the bike. On Monday,the revolver was also taken into police custody,said Police Commissioner P S Gill.
