‘Religion should not be imposed’

For bringing a change in the society, there is a dire need to improve the scientific temperament of people otherwise our 3000-year-old society cannot act in a rational way. This was stated by Sanal Edamaruku,President of the Indian Rationalist Association at a function held on Saturday.

Talking to Newsline, the rationalist writer said,”The Constitution of India has given us a duty to promote scientific temperament and humanism. But due to our unawareness,we are blindly adopting the irrational ways. Not only public but the political leaders of India are also visiting the tantriks, babas and deras. As they are the leaders of a democratic set-up and people follow them,so they should not encourage this practice.”

Edamaruku, who joined the rationalist movement of Kerela at the age of 16,said,”The political leaders should have the political will to bring a change in the society.” The writer, who has more than 30 books to his credit and many of his books have been translated in foreign languages, said,”I became a rationalist because of my family environment. My parents come from different religions and fortunately Iwas brought up in a rational environment. I feel that no religion should be imposed on any child and it should be left on the child’s own will to adopt a particular religion.”

Edamaruku said the Tarksheel Society in the city had been working for the last 25 years in Punjab to promote the scientific temperament among the common man. He said,”The change has started but it will take another 25 years yet to bring a total change in the thinking of people as common people are still lagging behind in their thoughts. They are still engulfed by superstitions and approach to so called godmen, tantrik for the remedies of their social, economical and psychological frustrations. Though there are provisions in the Constitution to prohibit the activities of these tantriks, nothing is being done by the administration and any government to take a legal action against them.”
