Asserting that Punjabis were at the forefront in the Independence movement,Minister for Medical Education and Research Chunni Lal Bhagat has said it is very sad to see that despite 66 years of freedom and democracy,the poor in our nation still have to struggle for two square meals.
It is the movement and the sacrifices made by great men that India could gain freedom. The Akali-BJP government is committed to initiating welfare schemes for the poor of Punjab, he said,unfurling the tricolour at the Guru Nanak Stadium to mark the 66th Independence Day.
Recalling the movements like the Gadar Lehar,Kuka Lehar,Pagri Sambhal Jatta lehar,Gurdwara Sudhar Lehar and Babar Akali Lehar that made up the freedom struggle,Bhagat paid tribute to freedom fighters like Shaheed Bhagat Singh,Rajguru,Sukhdev,Udham Singh,Madan Lal Dhingra and Lala Lajpat Rai.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Deputy Commissioner Rahul Tewari,Commissioner of Police Ishwar Singh,Senior Deputy Mayor Parveen Bansal and ADC Rishipal.
GADVASU started many livestock projects
The 66th Independence Day was celebrated at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU),Ludhiana,with great enthusiasm. Vice-Chancellor V K Taneja unfurled the national flag at 8.35 am on the university campus. He inspected the 1st Pb. R&V squadron of NCC cadets. He paid rich tribute to all those who fought for the countrys freedom.
Dr Taneja said GADVASU during its short span of establishment had initiated many collaborative and institutional projects for livestock development and production. Our focus in research is on clean milk production,value addition,quality control and by-products technology development, he added.
A cultural programme was organised by students and staff members of the varsity.
Cant progress without being good citizens
The 66th Independence Day was celebrated at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) with great enthusiasm. Vice- Chancellor Baldev Singh Dhillon unfurled the tricolour and extended greetings to the audience comprising officers,faculty,staff and students of PAU.
Dr Dhillon said we are enjoying freedom because of the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh,Rajguru,Sukhdev and many more. Punjab played a big role in the Independence movement,he said,adding that 120 people from Punjab were hanged and many more were imprisoned during the Independence movement.
He said hard working Punjabi farmers had made great contribution to the food security of the country.
