For the state government that harps on ensuring protection of women and their rights, here is a glimpse of what is happening in its own backyard. Manmeet Gill and her aged mother Rajinder Kaur Gill have been struggling for the last six years to free their home from the property mafia's clutches. Eight inquiries that began during the tenure of former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh ruled in favour of the Gill family, but they ran out of luck once the Akalis came to power,as the people who are accused of trying to throw them out of their home are allegedly backed by two prominent Akali leaders. The accused named in the two FIRs lodged by the complainants are Harcharan Singh,Rachpal Singh,Gurcharan Singh Grewal,Parminder Singh Grewal,Kulwinder Singh Grewal, who were previously partners in Manmeets fathers petrol pump business. Manmeet alleged,This piece of land measures 6,000 square yards, and is located right next to the General Bus Stand. I inherited the property after the death of my father. Its value has raised manifold in the last few years and observing that there is no male member in the house, these people (the accused) are trying to upsurp our home. These people have tried to trespass into our place and even brought bulldozers to raze the boundary wall of our house in January this year. She added: Two FIRs have been lodged against these people. Even a written order from Captain Amarinder Singh, ruling in our favour, has not helped our case. I have been making rounds of Police Commissioner Ishwar Singhs office, but he says he does not have time to go through my file. So,while the police are taking their own sweet time to go through our complaint, these people have razed the boundary wall of our house, giving free access to the passersby. Manmeet said the accused also took away the belongings of their domestic helps living on the premises. I kept calling the police while all this was happening, but no one heard our pleas. Similar is the condition of another 4,500 square yards of property that we have. Police Commissioner Ishwar Singh said: I have handed over the inquiry to SP (City 1),who is on leave till March 14. He will join duty on March 15 and will conduct an inquiry. Action will be taken immediately.
