The Municipal Corporation stood exposed on Tuesday when fire extinguishers at its own headquarters in Old City failed to work.
It happened after open wires in the office basement caught fire due to overload. However, the fire extinguishers, which had a manufacturing date of 2011, did not work as the pressure meters installed on them signalled inadequate pressure.
Talking to Ludhiana Newsline, Bhupinder Singh, Sub-Divisional Fire Officer, said, “As per norms, extinguishers have to be inspected every year and re-filled if necessary. If the needle is in red zone, it signals that it has either less pressure or more, and the equipment doesn’t work.”
Sources revealed that the MC office also does not have a fire safety certificate.
When contacted, Additional Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori said, “We will get the extinguishers re-checked soon.”
